In particular, I am interested in struggles over designations of public land and the private use of public land. I am co-editing a book with Barbara D. Lynch entitled, Caribbean Environmental Issues: Beyond Sun and Sand, and have just finished an article in this collection (co-edited with anthropologist Kathleen McCarffrey) on the struggle in Vieques, Puerto Rico.

My work concerns the production of nature, changing political ecologies of agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry in eastern Africa, and what has come to be known as the 'new enclosures' associated with the privatization of space and nature. In addition to these themes I have written about children's environmental learning and knowledge in rural Sudan, and how they use this knowledge in their everyday lives and as they come of age.
